Raleigh’s Beautiful Sunflowers:
Where to Them This Summer
If you’re looking for one of the best ways to enjoy summer in Raleigh, make plans to visit the stunning sunflower fields at Dorothea Dix Park. Every July, thousands of bright yellow blooms transform part of the park into one of the most photographed spots in the Triangle, and it’s easy to see why.
Whether you’re planning a family outing, a date night, or simply looking for a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors, this annual tradition is one you won’t want to miss.
Where Are the Sunflowers?
The sunflower field is located at Dorothea Dix Park at 1700 Umstead Drive in Raleigh. The field is free to visit and open daily from dawn until dusk, making it an easy stop whether you’re an early riser or hoping to catch the golden hour before sunset.
Each year, more than 100,000 sunflower seeds are planted across approximately five acres, creating a breathtaking display that typically reaches peak bloom in mid-July. The flowers usually remain beautiful for about two weeks, so timing your visit is important.
Tips for the Best Visit
To make the most of your trip, here are a few recommendations:
- Visit early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day and enjoy softer lighting for photos.
- Wear comfortable shoes since you’ll be walking on dirt and grassy paths.
- Bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray.
- Stay on the designated walking paths to help protect the flowers.
- Leave the blooms for everyone to enjoy—please don’t pick the sunflowers.
Make It a Raleigh Day
One of my favorite things about Raleigh is how easy it is to turn a simple outing into a full day of exploring.
After your walk through the sunflower field, consider:
- Enjoying lunch at one of downtown Raleigh’s local restaurants.
- Visiting the NC Farmers Market.
- Exploring nearby Dorothea Dix Park trails and skyline overlooks.
- Grabbing coffee or ice cream before heading home.
It’s the perfect way to slow down and enjoy everything our city has to offer.
