Raleigh’s NC Museum of History Will Close for Major Renovations for Two to Three Years

Nestled in the heart of Downtown Raleigh’s Bicentennial Plaza, the North Carolina Museum of History is getting ready for a significant makeover. The museum made an exciting statement on Wednesday, revealing plans for a complete renovation of both its physical space and its collection.

Located at 5 E. Edenton Street, directly beside the N.C. The Natural Sciences Museum, North Carolina. Since its founding in 1902, the Museum of History has been a vital component of cultural exploration and teaching. But as time goes on, evolution becomes necessary, and the museum is prepared to accept change.

The third-floor exhibitions will close on Monday, June 3, marking the beginning of the remodeling project. After that, on Monday, October 7, the museum will be closed to the public in its entirety. But history buffs, do not panic! Digital experiences will be available to maintain the spirit of exploration even during the closure.

As a last-ditch effort before starting its rehabilitation journey, the museum will present the Longleaf Film Festival on May 10–11 before temporarily saying goodbye.

This ambitious project attempts to reimagine how visitors engage with the rich tapestry of North Carolina’s past, though specifics of the makeover are still being kept under wraps. A news release promises a “exciting transformation” that will “unveil a dramatic new experience in a few years that will redefine how visitors connect with the vibrant tapestry of North Carolina’s past.”

“We’re embarking on an incredible journey, and what awaits us on the other side is nothing short of extraordinary — reimagined exhibits that will bring North Carolina history to life,” said Brad Wilson, interim director of the N.C. Museum of History.

As we eagerly anticipate the grand reopening, let’s bid adieu to the museum in its current form and look forward to the dawn of a new era in the exploration of North Carolina’s captivating history.
