A garden full of vegetables can be an excellent addition to your landscape and health, but growing the perfect one could be a tricky affair. 1. LOCATION

Make sure your garden is situated in a sunny place and is as near to your kitchen as possible. Not only does this allow you to keep a watch from your window, but it also makes it easy for you to pluck anything you may need. Grow the taller plants on the north or west side to avoid shading the smaller ones.

2. SOIL

For creating the perfect soil, include a lot of organic matter as well as compost. Once you have the correct mix, it will break when disturbed and bind well when squeezed. This type of soil is full of microorganisms that are essential for plant growth. 

Lastly, do not over fertilize as it can be harmful to the soil and plants. Instead maintain a mix of 20% organic compost to feed the soil. The soil will then provide the essential nutrients to the plants.

3. SEEDS

Seeds need to take in a lot of moisture before germination. Soak them properly way before the sowing starts, so they have enough time to get plump and round to enable the embryo inside to grow. 

Some vegetable seeds like cabbage and broccoli germinate without any pre-soaking, but others such as parsley and parsnip do not. The best way is to soak them overnight for several hours and then drain them immediately afterwards.

4. WATER WISELY

One inch of water per week, either artificial or natural, is enough for most vegetables. Use drip lines or soaker hoses for irrigation as they dispel water in a controlled manner. If the foliage becomes extra soaked, then diseases can creep in. Install an automatic timer to solve this vexing issue.

5. START SMALL

At the onset, grow only what you are able to maintain, instead of planting too much haphazardly. It is better to observe how the plants react  to pests and their growing habits by sowing a few containers first. Once you see things working, open up production to raised beds which are easier to manage.

6. MAINTAIN PROPER PEST CONTROL

Apply pesticides carefully, as most pests are eliminated by natural means. In case you have to use them, do it only if necessary in the late evening. Never apply in the morning as you are likely to kill the beneficial insects and pollinators who are active at that time.
